Origins

A Brief History

The 75mm 3-pin binding dominated Nordic backcountry travel for most of the 20th century, durable, simple, and rugged. Then in the late 1980s, Rottefella's New Nordic Norm (NNN) changed everything. Rails replaced pins, gear got lighter, and both skate and classic skiing became more efficient overnight.

Modern Systems

NNN, NNN BC and SkateX

NNN split into specialized branches as the sport grew. NNN for groomed tracks. NNN BC for backcountry with its wider, beefier bar and better ankle support. SkateX, developed by Rottefella with Madshus, moves the pivot point back under the ball of the foot for better stability and power transfer. It mounts on NIS plates but needs its own specific boots.

Compatibility

Bar Sizes and Compatibility โ€” Don't Mix Systems

Nordic boots have different bar widths and connection points that must match their binding system. NNN boots have a narrower bar for groomed-trail efficiency. NNN BC boots use a wider, stronger bar for off-trail durability. SkateX mounts on NIS plates like NNN but requires its own SkateX-specific boots โ€” standard NNN boots will not work.

Mismatched gear causes poor control, binding failure, and injury risk. Always pair NNN with NNN, NNN BC with NNN BC, and SkateX with SkateX-compatible boots. Not sure? Come in and we will check the fit before you head out.
